What is a touch of Africa?

Well, our ladies deemed it fit to take a peep into some of our African countries.

What were they looking for? 

a. way of life, b. culture, c. food d. dress e. religion

​These were the countries that they looked into: 

Botswana, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Morocco, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbia, Zimbabwe.

  5. Official languages: Somali, Arabic

  6. Continent: Africa

  7. Population: 17.6 million (2022) World Bank

  8. Somalis eat a banana with every meal

  9. National Food: Bariis Iskukaris:.

   2.    Morocco

   1.    Karen

   2.    Religion  - wasn't captured

   3.  Currency: Moroccan Dirham

   4.  You can step on the sands of the Sahara Desert.

         Traditional food: Couscous.

  1.   Uganda

  3.   Uganda is the second largest producer of bananas in the world.

  4.  Over 30 different indigenous languages are spoken in Uganda.

  5.  Women: Women have the right to live free from violence and discrimination.

  6.  Currency: The Ugandan Shilling

  7.  Religion: Christianity is the main religion in Uganda

    4 . Kenya

  1.  Chief export to the USA:  clothing, macadamia, coffee, titanium ores and concentrates, and black tea.

  2.  Currency: Kenyan Shilling

  3.  Religion: Kenya's primary religions are Christianity and Islam, with a variety of other faiths. 

  4. The National Dish: Ugali is considered the national dish of Kenya. .

   

    5. South Africa

       Juliet

​    1. Gender inequality and discrimination remain significant issues in South Africa, despite the country's   

       progressive constitution and various policy initiatives aimed at promoting gender equality.

   2. Currency: The South African rand

   3. National Dish: Bobotie (pronounced ba-bo-tea) is a meat-based dish and one of the most well-known                examples of Cape Malay cuisine. 

   4. Religion: South Africa has a diverse religious population, with Christianity being the most prevalent 

         religion

 

    6.   Ghana

    1.   Minnette

    2.  Currency: The currency of Ghana is the cedi (pronounced "seedy").

    3. Religion: 71 percent of the population are Christian, 20 percent Muslim, 3 percent adhere to indigenous            or animistic religious beliefs, and 6 percent                    belong to other religious groups or have no religious beliefs.

    4. The National Dish: Fufu is the national dish of Ghana.  Fufu is made by pounding cassava and unripe

         plantains together with a wooden pole, then mashing the mixture while adding water. 

    5.  Women: Women are given equal rights under the Constitution of Ghana. Multiple forms of violence

         against women still exist in Ghana

 

      7.   Zimbabwe

      2. Women: Zambia has many laws and policies that support women's rights.

      3.  Currency: The Kwacha is the currency of Zambia

      4. Religion: 95.5% of the country's population is Christian

      5. National Dish: Nshima is the staple food for 10 million Zambians. It is eaten at least twice per day; for

             lunch and dinner.

      8.     Egypt

      2.  Population:     100, 778, 915 inhabitants (2019).

      4.  Language: Some English.  The official language is Arabic.

      5  Religion; The official religion is Islam and a large majority of Egyptians are practicing Sunni Muslims.

      9.  Ethiopia

      2. Chief export to the USA: Coffee, garments, and leather products

      3. Currency: The Ethiopian Birr is the currency of Ethiopia

      4. Religion: The predominant religion in Ethiopia is Christianity, with a large presence of Orthodox

          Christianity in the central and northern regions of the country. Other religions practiced in Ethiopia

          include Islam and traditional faiths.

       5. The National Dish: Doro Wat is one of the most famous African dishes known to Ethiopia. It has been

          regarded as the national dish of the country.

       6. Women: Women experience physical, emotional or sexual violence, 65% of women have 

          experienced female genital mutilation, and only half of girls who enroll in primary schools make it to

          grade.  

 

      10     Zambia

      2.   Women: Zambia has many laws and policies that support women's rights.

      3.   Currency: The Kwacha is the currency of Zambia

      4.  Religion: 95.5% of the country's population is Christian

      5.  National Dish: Nshima is the staple food for 10 million Zambians. It is eaten at least twice per day;

          for lunch and dinner. Another second dish, known as ndiwo, umunani, dende or relish, must always

          accompany nshima. The relish is always a deliciously cooked vegetable, meat, fish, or poultry dish.

 

      11.   Tanzania

      1.  Carol

      2.  Women: women are expected to dress modestly in Tanzania, covering their shoulders and knees

          in public.  

      3  Currency: The Tanzanian shilling.

      4.  Religion: Tanzania's population is made up of a variety of religions, including Christianity and Islam.

      5.  National Dish: Ugali: a stiff porridge (it resembles polenta) made from maize flour and wate

          Ugali is one of the most common dishes served in Tanzania. It is often eaten with your hands and

          used to scoop up stews and sauces.
